Throughout last night the Lord’s prayer was repeated on the hour, every hour, by a roster of clerics from around Grenfell Tower. At 1.30 am, the time at which the fire took hold on 14 June 2017, the names of the 72 victims was read aloud.
At 12 noon today, the silence will spread across the country for 72 seconds as the nation remembers the people of Grenfell – not only those who died but also their families and loved ones, survivors, members of the local community and those who stepped in to help.
The inquiry into the fire, which began hearing evidence this month, has paused for this week to allow participants and others to take part in commemorative events.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy, particularly on this first anniversary.
