From time to time SHAL will appoint an apprentice in the maintenance section.
This apprentice will learn trade skills with a view to a long term career in property maintenance.
For the person taken on, an appointment will follow an open advertisement and SHAL’s usual selection procedure which will include an interview.
SHAL will ensure all college costs are covered and attendance at college will usually be for one day a week. For the rest of the (40 hour) working week the apprentice will be with SHAL’s qualified and experienced trades staff.
For the first two years the apprentice will be paid the National Minimum Wage. Upon successful completion of the second year of the training pay will rise to scale point 1 on SHAL’s salary scale.
If there is a permanent post available and year 3 has been successfully completed the employee will move through SHAL’s “development grade” starting at scale point 5. Progression to scale points 8 and 11 will take place on 1st April in the following two years.
Finally the employee will join SHAL’s qualified experienced trades staff on point 14.
This policy is operative from 1 April 2011
